WHY is a list so important???
Your list is crucial because these are the people who trust and value you and your website enough to agree to stay connected by periodically receiving messages from you. They have entered their info (usually name and e-mail) on a landing page, sometimes called a ‘capture page’ or a 'squeeze page' which gives you permission to stay in contact.
Managing an e-mail list can be challenging. You have to figure out: 1) how to stay out of the spam filters 2) how to get your message opened 3) how to get and keep subscribers 4) how to get a website and get traffic to your website 5) how to actually process orders online 6) how to do a legal 'unsubscribe link' 7) how many messages to send and what to write to people 8) how affiliate programs work 9) how to set up and automate the process 10) how to 'get the click' that actually makes a sale and on and on and on...

That's one way to understand the power of a list since you will send messages now and then with various links inside for more information. Some will have interest in one or another (ping!), some won't. The bigger the list, the more silver balls bouncing around in your system, the more pings. While you are off doing something else, the people on your list can learn, be entertained, search for additional information, or they can click to buy, enroll (in an online class maybe), sign up or sign out - any of those choices is just fine.
